For portfolios up to $10,000 (mutual funds only)…
The performance of the stock market, combined with the accessibility through low minimums of many funds, have provided us with the opportunity to create a nice asset allocation mix for the $10,000-and-under portfolio size.
Currently, we are recommending the following portfolio mix:
25% in Large Cap
Value
25% in Mid-Cap
Value
20% in Mid-Cap
Growth
15% in Small
Growth
15% in the Technology sector
The market is showing us a lot of good things within a variety of intra-market asset classes. As a result, it’s a great time for an investor who has at least a few thousand dollars to build a portfolio that is well-diversified and capable of sampling a variety of opportunities. Still, the portfolio should be growth oriented, overall. Although we currently have 50% of the overall portfolio allocated to Value securities, remember not to confuse Value with Income securities. The fact is that Value, even Large Cap Value securities, has shown some nice growth in this market, so these are good choices to consider including in your own mix.
As for sample funds, we like BlackRock Equity Dividend A Load Waived (800-441-7762) as a representative for Large Cap Value, BB&T Mid Cap Value A Load Waived (800-228-1872) as a representative for Mid-Cap Value, First American Mid Cap Growth Opportunities Y (800-677-3863) as a representative fund for the Mid-Cap Growth class, and BlackRock Small Cap Core Inv A Load Waived (800-441-7762) for a possible entry in Small Growth. You will notice that we have also included a specific sector as a part of our allocation models for this month. For the longer-term investor, we are comfortable recommending consideration of the Technology sector for portfolio inclusion. Waddell & Reed Advisors Science and Technology A Load Waived (888-923-3355) is an appropriate representative of the Technology sector right now for fund investors.
