For portfolios up to $2,000 (mutual funds only)…
Currently, we are recommending that portfolios of this size maintain a selection of broad-based funds that do not target any one particular sector of the economy. At present, there are actually a number of solidly-performing funds, with low purchase minimums, that sample a wide variety of different industries within each fund.
Right now, we are recommending a portfolio mix as follows:
30% in Large Cap
Value
35% in Large
Growth
35% in Small Growth
As you can see from the mix, 70% of our current asset allocation for portfolios of this size is in the area of growth. The current market climate is encouraging for growth-oriented positions, and accounts of this size are chiefly interested in capital appreciation anyway; combine that with the limited downside associated with the small account size, and you have a perfect portfolio candidate for growth-oriented allocations. That said, we are pleasantly surprised by how well many Large Cap Value offerings have been doing in this growth climate, and given that they are generally less volatile by nature, we think including them at this time in the given apportionment is a win-win.
As for sample funds, we like Vantagepoint Equity Income (800-669-7400) as a good representative of the Large Cap Value group, Ivy Capital Appreciation A Load Waived (800-777-6472) as a solid player in the Large Growth arena, and ING JPMorgan Small Cap Core Equity S (800-366-0066) as a quality offering in the area of Small Growth. We are very pleased that there remain some excellent funds available to the so-called “small investor,” funds that prove you in no way must have tens of thousands of dollars in order to access quality fund management and overall inspiring market performance.
