For those accounts with appreciably more than $10,000 but not over $50,000, we find ourselves in a market climate that is very favorable for capital appreciation potential.
Currently, we are recommending the following portfolio mix:
25% in Large Cap
Value
25% in Mid-Cap
Value
10% in Foreign Large Blend
10% in Small Cap
Growth
15% in
Energy
15% in Technology
As for sample funds, we like BlackRock Equity Dividend A Load Waived (800-441-7762) as a representative for Large Cap Value, and BB&T Mid Cap Value A Load Waived (800-228-1872) as a representative for Mid-Cap Value. The next category on our list is Foreign Large Blend, which samples large international stocks that are not necessarily Value stocks, per se. In Foreign Large Blend, a good representative fund is Fifth Third International Equity A Load Waived (800-282-5706). Small Cap Growth is a another solid area right now, with Vanguard Small Cap Growth Index (800-662-7447) serving as a good representative entry in that category. Energy and Technology are good options for sector-specific investing right now, and in those categories we like T. Rowe Price New Era (800-638-5660) and Waddell & Reed Advisors Science and Technology A Load Waived (888-923-3355), respectively.
Sample stock positions we find appropriate presently for portfolios up to $50,000 are all Large Capitalization representatives, and include Halliburton (symbol: HAL), Chevron (symbol: CVX), and Sunoco (symbol: SUN) from the Energy sector; Ball Corp. (symbol: BLL), Dow Chemical (symbol: DOW) and Caterpillar (symbol: CAT) from Manufacturing; and AMBAC Financial Group (symbol: ABK) and MetLife (symbol: MET) from Financial Services.
