What is An Air Courier?

Simply put, an air courier is a person who agrees to act as the on-board escort of a small amount of cargo that is checked as baggage.  It is the courier’s baggage allowance that the company uses for the shipment, and in exchange for giving up his baggage allowance to the courier company, the individual acting as the courier can purchase his ticket to the cargo’s destination at a truly bargain price.

 Some background…

Couriers have been used in one form or another for hundreds of years. Throughout history, their most famous role has been as the safekeepers of important military documents and other papers which carry a great deal of political significance. We’ve all seen movies which show couriers carrying and delivering important papers to generals or politicians just before a big battle or other event of similarly major proportions. While those kinds of couriers still exist, that is hardly how they are used most commonly these days.

Air couriers, as you’ll come to know them today, were first used in the sixties as the popularity of air travel became more pronounced. While just about anything can be moved via an air courier company, most regular courier companies will not handle anything too exotic, like jewelry or other similar high-dollar items. These kinds of cargo are moved with the assistance of special, high-security courier companies which maintain their own staff of trained courier personnel used to handling those kinds of materials. The kinds of things which are most regularly moved by courier companies are very ordinary items which by themselves don’t seem too exciting to most of us but nevertheless maintain a great deal of importance for both the party sending them as well as the party receiving them. Many of these air courier companies are regularly looking for people who can act as their actual on-board representatives in order to accompany the cargo to its destination. This is where you come in; by agreeing to fly as the company’s representative in the capacity of an air courier and giving up your checked baggage allowance in favor of the courier package, you may purchase your international airline ticket for deeply-discounted prices, well below the standard “bargain” prices we think we’re getting when we go through one of the well-known travel websites.  One of the most frequently-asked questions regarding the use of air couriers is why these companies don’t simply send the merchandise as "air freight" rather than as "checked baggage", which is how couriered shipments are sent? In a nutshell, it comes down to a matter of time and cost.
